Depot Climbing

Zofia Reych is a climber, anthropologist and the founder and director of the annual Women’s Bouldering Festival in Fontainebleau; an international event aiming to give underrepresented climbers the confidence to take space within the community, as well as to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable practices in outdoor climbing.

Earlier this year, Zofia released their very first book; Born to Climb: Rock Climbing Pioneers to Olympic Athletes. In the short time since its publication, it has received rave reviews, by intertwining the origins and development of rock climbing through the modern era of climbing and elite competition culminating in climbing’s Olympic debut.

Born to Climb

This is a book focused on the fascinating cultural history of rock and competition climbing, offering a fresh perspective on big personalities of the sport from eighteenth-century pioneers to the latest Olympic athletes.  But this is not just a read that celebrates the famous climbers of past and present, it is one that delves into modern sporting participation and culture, all the while weaving the author’s own climbing journey experiences.

An engaging and sometimes funny read, Zofia also explores the sensitive and often overlooked topics that effect all aspects of life, climbing being no expectation. From the gender divide, to capitalism and the tension between aesthetic and athletic approaches to climbing, this book is a must-read for any keen climber, whether you’re a gym dweller or as crag crusher, keen bean to part-time participant.
