Accessible Climbing

MakingEverybodyStrong is the mantra at BIG Depot Leeds, and to us, that means everybody! Accessible climbing options for individuals with complex needs, disabilities, or neurodivergence are integral to our mission to support every climber who uses our centre, regardless of background or ability, in enjoying the positive impact that climbing has on their lives.

We know from our own experience that climbing is a long-term, lifelong influence, and it can provide independence and confidence to those who participate, as well as open up a whole new community with a sense of belonging in safe spaces.

We work with Access Sport to bring more inclusive climbing sessions to Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Below are details of spaces and sessions that we provide to make climbing inclusive for everybody.

Sensory-Friendly Hours

We’re aware that a lot is going on inside a climbing centre, from busy periods of footfall to loud music and drills filling the space.

That’s why we’ve looked at when we can point to some less stimulating hours for those who prefer a quieter visit to enjoy climbing without all of the hullabaloo that can often go with it.

Between 2 pm and 4 pm, every Friday, we will ensure that there is no drill work taking place within the centre (if necessary, we will signpost) and either turn the music down or off, so that you can enjoy a quieter time while you climb.

We offer a full hoist set-up to allow severely disabled people to access the wall. This can range from supporting the climber while they climb to simply providing a sensory experience.

If you would like to discuss hoist climbing further, contact the centre on 0113 318 3367 or email us at [email protected]
