Benefits of Climbing

Physical Fitness & Wellbeing

We like to think of climbing as ‘free’ exercise, and by that, we mean a workout that doesn’t feel like a workout! Utilising your whole body, you’ll improve your overall strength, agility and endurance.

You’ll do all this without even knowing as you’ll be so busy having fun and socialising with friends and other climbers in a relaxing and inclusive environment.  We like to work out smarter, not harder!

Mental Health Benefits

Studies have shown that climbing can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.  Climbing is thought to be particularly effective because you can get immediate gratification from successfully climbing a problem or route, and it provides you with the opportunity to solve problems creatively.

Mindfulness & Community

Climbing requires a lot of concentration to get your whole body moving and your mind problem-solving, which allows you to be in the moment, which has been known to improve your mental health and ability to focus on any given task.

It also provides the opportunity for social growth, problem-solving as part of a team and, as a diverse and inclusive sport, meet people from walks of life you may not have come across before.

What is Bouldering?

Bouldering is the fastest-growing area of indoor rock climbing, increasing numbers by 15-20% every year according to data from the Association of British Climbing Walls, with hundreds of thousands of participants every day across the country, and millions more coming to give it a try!

The simplicity of bouldering is what attracts new participants, as there is no need for ropes, no need for harnesses, and (if you choose) no need for a partner! All you need is a pair of shoes and a can-do attitude.

Climbs are never more than 4 meters high and above safety matting, and you’ll climb short but challenging ‘problems’ designed to utilise your strength, technique, balance and mental creativity.  And that’s what makes it so addictive!

What is Roped Climbing?

Roped climbing involves two people (climber & belayer), but can also be done alone using auto-belay devices. In roped climbing, the climbs are called ‘routes’.

When climbing, the person climbing the route is tied to one end of a rope, with the other end held on the ground by a belayer, who controls the rope to arrest any falls and keep the climber safe.

Auto-belay devices provide climbers the opportunity to climb without a partner to act as a belayer, as they are automatic electro-mechanical systems that keep a climber safe while climbing and lower the climber safely.

Top Rope Climbing

This style of climbing is climbing with the rope already in place, attached to an anchor at the top of the wall.

As the climber ascends the route on one end of the rope, the belayer takes in slack on the other end so that as the climber ascends, the rope holds the climber secure in their position without falling.

Lead Climbing

This style of climbing is an advanced method, where the climber attaches to an end of the rope and carries it up the wall with them, clipping into carabiners along the way to arrest any falls that may occur.

The belayer on ground level pays out slack in the rope so that the climber can continue to rise up the route.
